Halloween Party Cleanup: Candy, Fake Blood & Glitter Out of Carpet

Face Paint & Makeup

Scrape off any excess first, then treat it like a grease stain rather than a regular spill. Rubbing makes it worse here, blotting and lifting works better than scrubbing side to side.

A cracked glow stick leaks a liquid that can leave a slightly sticky, sometimes faintly glowing residue on carpet. It’s not usually a permanent stain risk, but it does attract dust and dirt if it’s left to dry in. Blot up as much as possible right away, then clean the area with a mild solution before it has a chance to sit overnight.

Costume Glitter

Glitter is less a stain problem and more a “will I ever actually get this out” problem. Vacuuming spreads it around more than it removes it in one pass. A better approach is a lint roller or piece of tape pressed directly onto the carpet first, to lift the bulk of it, then vacuum afterward for what’s left. Expect to find stray glitter for weeks either way, that part’s just Halloween.

Candy & Chocolate

Melted chocolate and sticky candy residue respond well to a cold water blot followed by a small amount of dish soap, similar to other sugar-based spills. The bigger risk with Halloween candy is the stuff that gets stepped on and ground into the carpet before anyone notices, so a quick walk-through check before bed can save a stain from setting overnight.
